Literacy
In Literacy with Mrs Ketley On 23-03-2009 we were learning about formal letters. To make our Literacy a bit more funny and exciting we had to complain about something in a book. E.G complain about a wardrobe that doesn't take you into a magical land and you just stub your toe on the wooden back, or you buy a rabbit hole from B&Q to take you into wonderland but instead you end up in hospital with a broken ankle. I decided to do Harry Potter and platform 9 3/4 click the link saying attachment to read. During this lesson with Mrs Ketley I have learned the features of formal and informal text. Lets hope it comes up in SATS. (:

What A Load Nonsense
My brother drives me
My teacher told me To put a sock in it. (My mouth is still cheesy.)
My Dad told me to Hold your horses (I’m still waiting Dad. There getting feisty.)
My friend says that she’s Up to her eyes in work (Gosh. I wonder where her body went.)
My parents told me Not to bottle up my feelings (Then my mum goes and drinks ‘em all.)
All my teachers say Don’t get your knickers in a twist. (Well I certainly learned that lesson!)
My Dad says that’s not His cup of tea (Then what is?)

Pupils in Class JF9 took part in a debate about whether ghosts were in fact real. We assembled in a local village hall (the classroom) and had experts from The Ghost Hunters, The Ghostbusters and Scientists. These experts came from far and wide, Ms Megan C travelled all the way from American and added some local dialect to her contributions. The issue arose because local residents had spotted some unusual happenings at 32 Vine Street, a deserted, run-down house which was due for demolition. The Town Council representative (Mr Furness) wanted to know if the suspect ghosts would continue to play havoc on the local village after demolition began. He asked the scientists and the ghost experts for their views, which were well argued and thought through. Although everyone contributed to the debate, we didn't reach a conclusion. A particularly fierce property developer (Mrs Leslie) joined in the debate and offered her views, the debate, however, continues..... NOTE: Watch out for further role play... Mr Furness

A reading buddy system is being trialled at Kings Road Primary School between children in classes JF9 and KW5. We are encouraging a model whereby older children are mentors to younger children to see explore what gains pupils make from the experience. Today, 12 youngsters were involved in this weekly pilot and it was felt pupils benefited, not only through helping each other with the mechanics of reading, but also in understanding and enjoying reading. Whilst some children were heard read, others had stories read to them. At the end of the session, pupils in JF9 gave House Points to the younger children for their efforts in reading. This is also an experience for teachers to gain a greater understanding of working in a mixed age environment and different groups of children. Pupils in JF9 were delighted to give feedback on how well they felt the session had gone. I hope some of them will share their thoughts with you on this blog site. Mr Furness |
