TOM !

A reading buddy system is being trialled at Kings Road Primary School between children in classes JF9 and KW5. We are encouraging a model whereby older children are mentors to younger children to see explore what gains pupils make from the experience. Today, 12 youngsters were involved in this weekly pilot and it was felt pupils benefited, not only through helping each other with the mechanics of reading, but also in understanding and enjoying reading. Whilst some children were heard read, others had stories read to them. At the end of the session, pupils in JF9 gave House Points to the younger children for their efforts in reading. This is also an experience for teachers to gain a greater understanding of working in a mixed age environment and different groups of children. Pupils in JF9 were delighted to give feedback on how well they felt the session had gone. I hope some of them will share their thoughts with you on this blog site.
Mr Furness
This year jf9 have had a new project to learn about Africa. The first thing I learnt was about african school life. There classrooms are made out of planks of wood and have proper blackboards. The things they make most of there food out of is wheat and barley.Africa is just rocky plateau covered by grasslands with huge lakes feeding rivers such as the worlds longest river ,the Nile. The first great civilization in africa arose 6,000 years ago on the banks of the river lower nile. The search for maritime trade routes to africa to Europe in the 15th and 16th century.Slavery and colonialism followed.Although illiteary, poverty, disease and civil strife plauge much of continent Africas substantial natrul resources offer hope.

Yesterday we had a new topic it was about Africa so we looked in some books. I looked in a book about Kenya that really helped me alot. By the end of the sesson I had a page full of facts so Mr Furness asked me to tell some facts to the whole class. I really enjoyed yesterday because It was different to what we normally do and I know alot about Africa. I hope you enjoyed my little speech. Goodbye.
