A reading buddy system is being trialled at Kings Road Primary School between children in classes JF9 and KW5. We are encouraging a model whereby older children are mentors to younger children to see explore what gains pupils make from the experience. Today, 12 youngsters were involved in this weekly pilot and it was felt pupils benefited, not only through helping each other with the mechanics of reading, but also in understanding and enjoying reading. Whilst some children were heard read, others had stories read to them. At the end of the session, pupils in JF9 gave House Points to the younger children for their efforts in reading. This is also an experience for teachers to gain a greater understanding of working in a mixed age environment and different groups of children. Pupils in JF9 were delighted to give feedback on how well they felt the session had gone. I hope some of them will share their thoughts with you on this blog site.
