Information for Parents

Dear Parents,

As some of you have seen already, the pupils have been very excited and interested in using online technologies to share and discuss some of the work that we have been covering in class. I am delighted by the enthusiasm and excitement shown by the pupils and I am sure the benefits to their learning is quite obvious. However, some of you may have some reservations about whether this work places children in any danger as they share their thoughts and ideas online.

Kings Road Primary School has a very clear policy on Internet safety and protecting children from the potential dangers that exist. Whilst these dangers do exist, we have put several steps in place to ensure the safety of our young people is first and foremost.

Firstly, we are very clear that children do not identify themselves to others on the Internet, and where they do, they are to use firstnames only.

Secondly, we ensure that children are careful about the information they post. In class, we have been learning about using the Internet safely and responsibly. This has included a discussion on what information we should and shouldn't share when on the Internet, in both 'chat room' spaces and when building web pages.

Thirdly, the children have been learning about acting responsibly if they are in anyway uncomfortable about the information they see, or contacted by anyone they don't know. In either instance, they should tell an adult who, unless a member of staff, should notify the school.

In this Internet project, communication can only take place by those who know the password to the blog site. They are authenticated and 'trusted' users of this website. Other web visitors are permitted to comment, indeed we'd want family members to be involved in the children's work, online. However, these comments are moderated by a member of staff, before they are published on the Internet.

I am currently responsible for ensuring the safe use of this website. If you have any questions or concerns about this project, or are looking to get involved in supporting this project, please do get in touch.

More information about safety online can be found on this website, CEOP.
